We had planned on getting a much earlier start on Sunday. Unfortunately, Levi was up most of the night with work calls and troubleshooting so we opted for a later start to give him a couple hours of sleep. Our first stop after coffee and breakfast was at Medicine Lake on Maligne Lake Road. The water level of the lake varies from season to season and sometimes it disappears completely due to underwater sinkholes! When we were there last summer, the water level was much higher. In fact, the trail we walked on this time was completely underwater last summer. I love the scenery here though… I think it’s one of my favourite places in the park.
I can’t remember what Lexi was explaining here… he was our “tour guide” for the trip. Always looking up information about where we were and what we were seeing.
An accurate representation of their relationship… ?
This was the two of them innocently walking away after Levi was throwing rocks in the lake to make tourists think fish were jumping. They didn’t see him for a while and the reactions were pretty hilarious. Probably one of those “had to be there to get it” moments, but I’m pretty sure mom was crying from laughing so hard.
Walking back to the car, we heard a high-pitched screech and Levi stopped us immediately. It wasn’t long before we managed to spot this little guy…. the elusive pika. Aka the cutest little rodent you will ever see. If we hadn’t heard him screech at us for disturbing him, we never would have seen him. They’re tiny and very well camouflaged.
Rubbing his face… ARE YOU KIDDING ME WITH THIS CUTENESS.
I’ll spare you the 30 other pika photos I kept (out of probably 100… I was a little obsessed) and we’ll move on. Fall leaves!
We made a quick stop on the side of the road to enjoy this beautiful view…
We made it to Maligne Lake!
We did a quick 1/2 mile walk to a viewpoint…
And then continued on just a liiiiittle farther.
Beautiful turquoise water.
Taking pictures again… ;) This time of some animal tracks in the mud.
We headed back to the car pretty quickly because there were storm clouds headed our way and we didn’t want to get rained on. You can see it already starting to rain/snow on the mountains in the distance.
This little guy was not shy.
Back in the parking lot we ate lunch and I took pictures of the beautiful mountain range.
After some driving, some coffee and a little bit of shopping in town, we decided to head back to the hotel. It was already nearly 5pm and we were all pretty exhausted… and we had an early start the next morning to get Levi to a meeting on time.
It was a beautiful weekend in the park and as usual, I can’t wait to go back.
More photos from Mom’s visit will be up soon! You can see all of the photos from her visit by clicking here.
